Supporting your child, or any young person, in relation to sexual health and relationships can be difficult. The experiences they have in their early years may impact on how they reflect on sex, relationships and sexuality in the future. Whether it's about physical health, mental health, or responding to a specific situation. It may also affect how comfortable they feel coming forward if they face any challenges or have any questions.
Luckily, there are many organisations across Newcastle that can help. This could be supporting you as a family or by providing a safe, confidential space for your child to get access to healthcare and advice. In the support directory you will find access to healthcare services, such as:
- the C-card scheme
- STI Checks
- advice drop-ins
- LQBTQ+ groups providing services
- support for people who have experienced abuse and/or trauma
- health difficulties support.
The following services may be useful in times of difficulty or when there is a need to act quickly:
Emergency Contraception: A list of places you can access emergency contraception is available on the Newcastle Hospitals website.
LGBTQ+ Support and Referral: the National LGBTQ+ Helpline is open between 10am and 10pm every day on 0300 330 0630.
Pregnancy Support and Referral: the British Pregnancy Advisory Service Helpline is open 24/7 on 03457 30 40 30.
Sexual Assault: If you've been sexually assaulted, there are a range of services you can access quickly and confidentially. If you are in danger, always call 999. You can access support at your local A&E or walk-in health centre. The Sexual Assault Referral Centre 0300 223 0099 (line open 24/7) based in central Newcastle, offers free support and practical help to anyone who has experienced sexual violence and/or sexual abuse.
If you want to talk to someone, the National Sexual Health Service helpline is open between 9am and 8pm weekdays, and 11am to 4pm weekends on 0300 123 7123.
