Northbourne Youth Initiative

Northbourne Youth Initiative was set up in 2000 by local residents and parents to address a lack of opportunities and facilities for children and young people on the Northbourne Estate. Being based in an end terrace house on the estate we have always had a presence in the local community and are embedded in the local area. In 2010 the organisation received charity status. Our focus has not changed we are still a local charity working with those who need us most. Many are from the estate but we are targeting a wider remit now, as we grow and are able to offer more services for young people

Our Junior Activities are for children 8-13 year olds, and run 4 evenings per week. The activities are designed to give a balance of fun play activities and informal learning opportunities. We have open access sessions, football, arts & crafts, in-house awards, cooking schemes and AQA unit awards; meaning we can recognise the achievements of everyone who takes part.

Senior activities are designed for 13-19 years. We have 4 sessions per week which run Monday-Thursday, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award makes up two of these.  We also run a girls group and a football project as well as open access and focused group activities. If you have an idea let us know and we will try our best to make it happen with your help.

Activities vary throughout each holiday period.  But regular sessions term time are as follows.

Junior (8-11) Monday/Thursday 4-5.30pm

Inters (11-14) Monday 6-7.30 & Wednesday 4-5.30pm

  • We always say come along one and see if it's for you, most people return and make lots of new friends along the way!
  • We have a quiet/calm space for young people to chill out in.
  • We offer small group work/activities.
  • We can offer peer support/buddying if required.
  • Changing facilities for young people with continence issues are available.
  • Parents/carers can contact staff to discuss individual needs.
