Children's Speech and Language Therapy post 16-25

We offer direct and indirect speech and language therapy input for young people in further education, who have speech and language therapy agreed in their educational health care plan (EHCP).

This may include students who have autism, learning difficulties or hearing impairment as well as a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.

Aims:

  • To improve the speech, language and communication skills of young people in colleges and 6th forms across the North East
  • Improve life skills and functional communication skills
  • Support young people in work placements and towards employment

The work we do includes:

  • Individualised speech, language and communication programmes to be used by teaching and support staff and monitored at appropriate times
  • Periods of individual therapy consolidated by teaching/support staff and parents.
  • Advice to teaching, support staff, work placement staff on useful strategies.
  • Appropriate advice/targets for a student’s Education and Health Care Plan
  • Training for teaching and support staff
  • Relevant information to help a student transition from further education and hopefully to employment

Young people may access this service if they:

  • Are between 16 and 25 years of age
  • Have an EHCP with a specific speech and language therapy recommendation under the health section (or have a Connexions top-up)
  • Are registered with a Newcastle GP
