Newcastle Carers: support for young carers

Newcastle carers logo

Young carers are children and young people under 18 who look after a family member because they have an illness, disability, mental health condition, or addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Young carers might do extra jobs around the home, like cooking, cleaning, or helping the person they care for get dressed. Lots of young carers are proud that they can offer support, but having extra responsibilities can be difficult and impact their lives at home and at school or college. Young carers often have less free time compared to other children to take part in social activities.

The animations below show young people with caring responsibilities:

If you are a young carer or know someone who is, it is important to tell an adult you trust, like a teacher, GP, support worker, or another family member. Telling someone you are a young carer is the first step to getting help and support for you and the person you care for.

Talk to Newcastle Carers about your caring role by contacting their Carers Information Line on 0191 275 5060, Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm.
