St Oswald’s Hospice are developing a new Children’s Outreach Service

According to Together for Short Lives, recent research shows that the number of children needing palliative care has trebled in the last twenty years.

Here at St Oswald’s Hospice, our Children and Young Adults Service are developing a new Children’s Outreach Service, in response to the ever-increasing demand for support for children with complex health needs.

Jessica Carlington and Rebecca Liddle, are the Senior Sisters heading up our Outreach Service. They said:

“This is an exciting expansion of our Children and Young Adults Service which will complement the short break care we currently provide onsite at St Oswald’s Hospice. Through the Outreach Service we aim to provide consistent and individualised care at home to children and young people aged 0-19 living with complex health needs.

“The hope is that this will have a positive impact on the children and families that we support, as well as reducing waiting lists and allowing more families from across the North East to access our service and specialist care.”

This much-needed new service will potentially fill an unmet gap for children and young people to receive specialist care in their own home and give families quality time – and it’s something we’re really excited to introduce.

How the Children’s Outreach Service may support children and their families:

•    Meeting the individual health needs of children at home
•    Supporting children and young people in their own home and out in the community
•    Providing information and expertise to families and other professionals who may work with the children in the home/community
•    Planning fun and appropriate activities in the family home and facilitating trips
