Gosforth Junior - Visual Impairment ARP

The Visual Impairment Additionally Resourced Provision (VIARP) for severely sight impaired (SSI) and sight impaired (SI) pupils is centrally funded by Newcastle City Council. Some of the pupils from neighbouring local authorities can also be placed in the VIARP.

The VIARP is staffed by one Qualified Teacher of Visual Impairment and two specialist Learning Support Assistants.

It is a fully inclusive provision and pupils with VI are included within mainstream classes with support from VIARP staff. This support includes -

  • Monitoring and assessment of functional vision
  • Modification and adaptation of resources
  • Access to and training in the use of a range of appropriate low vision aids (LVAs)
  • IT assessment
  • Mobility and independent living skills training
  • One to one teaching of Braille literacy
  • One to one and small group teaching
  • VI Arc staff liaise closely with subject teachers to ensure that all pupils with VI make appropriate progress
  • Pupils have opportunities to participate in all areas of school life including after school clubs
  • Close liaison with SEND Support, Assessment and Review Team to ensure smooth transition to FE or employment.

As a team we are committed to encouraging resourcefulness and resilience in young people so that they will have the confidence and skills to achieve their full potential.

The VIARP at Gosforth Junior High Academy provides a continuum of provision for pupils with visual impairment with VIARPs hosted in both Regent Farm First School and Gosforth  Academy.
