We're here to let all lesbian, gay, bi and trans people, here and abroad, know they're not alone.
We believe we're stronger united, so we partner with organisations that help us create real change for the better. We have laid deep foundations across Britain - in some of our greatest institutions - so our communities can continue to find ways to flourish, and individuals can reach their full potential. We’re here to support those who can’t yet be themselves.
But our work is not finished yet. Not until everyone feels free to be who they are, wherever they are.
AKT in the North East supports LGBTQ+ young people (16-25) who are homeless or living in a hostile environment.
Open to anyone who has experienced anti-LGBTQIA+ violence or harassment and needs a safe space to talk. The helpline is run by LGBTQIA+ people and is completely confidential. It is operated by Galop, the LGBTQIA+ anti-violence charity supporting people facing hate crime, domestic abuse and sexual violence.
Live webchat also available via the website.
We will call you back if you can't get through to us the first time or if you call outside our opening hours. Just leave us a message with your contact details and the best time to get back to you.
What we do
The Northern Region Gender Dysphoria Service is a service for people who experience persistent confusion and/or discomfort as a result of a discrepancy between their assigned sex and their gender identity. This includes people who want to change physical aspects of their gender as well as those who do not.
Some people who are distressed about their assigned sex have other health problems such as physical disabilities or mental health difficulties. The service is open to all but people with more complex needs may require additional support from other services.
Rainbow Home is a charity providing support for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees in the Northeast of England. Working with people who have fled their countries because of persecution based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Northern Pride was formed in August 2007 after a brief gap in Pride activities following the closure of Pride on the Tyne. A research project was commissioned and carried out by MET Ltd to establish what the North East LGBTQ+ community would like from a Pride event. These results were fed back to the community in May 2007 and from this feedback, a group of volunteers came forward and formed the first Northern Pride Committee.
