Getting Help and Support
You can discuss your concerns and seek professional advice from your Health Visitor, GP or Early Years Setting.
This may result in a referral to Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy.
If further advice and support is needed around your child’s play and learning a referral to the SEND Outreach Service can be made.
Helping your Child at Home
Play is integral to your child's early language and social development.
Playing with others can help your child to develop their communication and social skills.
If your child struggles to engage in shared play and communication with others, you can find lots of useful information to support them in the following booklets created by the Newcastle Paediatric Speech Therapy Team.
Strategies to Support Early Communication Skills
Using Visuals to Support your Child
If your child struggles to understand and join in with daily home routines and social situations, you could use Visual Supports.
Visual Supports can help to:
- Increase your child’s understanding of spoken language
- Provide structure and routine
- Make transitions easier
- Help your child to manage changes and cope with new situations
Here is a selection of commonly used symbols that can be printed and used to support your child at home:

- Early Health Notification
-
When a health care professional identifies that a young child, under 5, may have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) they are required by law to tell the local authority.
This is called a Early Health Notification. (see flowchart)
Referral to SEND Outreach Service (Early Years)
These referrals are made to request direct involvement from specialist teachers and/or specialist nursery nurses. The involvement can consist of direct support for children with SEND in their early years and/or advice, support and training for the child’s parents / carers and their Early Years setting / school.
